Postcard Norwich Pull's Ferry Watergate Tuck's Glosso Series 5511 c1904

Norwich, England1906Pre-linenGood

Willows trail into still water and punts drift lazily at their moorings in this supremely peaceful Edwardian view of Pull's Ferry, Norwich — the medieval watergate that once allowed boats to navigate directly to the Cathedral Close along a now-filled canal from the River Wensum. Published by Raphael Tuck & Sons in their prestigious "Glosso" finish series, this card has the rich halftone warmth characteristic of Tuck's finest pre-WWI production. The ferry cottage, with its distinctive overhanging upper storey and chimneys, nestles beneath an arch bridge while rowing boats crowd the foreground. The back text, printed by Tuck's, notes that Pull's Ferry is "the Watergate of the Cathedral premises" and an "interesting relic of old days," with fragments of Norwich city's medieval fortifications visible along the right bank of the Wensum. The card was published "By Appointment" to their Majesties the King and Queen — almost certainly Edward VII and Alexandra, dating the series to pre-1910. Unused and unaddressed, it is in sound condition for its age, with only light toning to the card stock. A lovely piece for Norwich, Norfolk, or Tuck's publisher collectors.
