Postcard c1906 New Haven CT Yale University Woolsey Hall Souvenir Mail Card

New Haven, Connecticut, USA1906Pre-linenFair-Good

Horse-drawn wagons rumble past the newly completed Woolsey Hall as gentlemen in top hats stroll the elm-shaded corner of College and Grove Streets in this striking early accordion leporello from New Haven, Connecticut — Yale University's grand domed auditorium had only just opened in 1901, making this card an early commemorative of one of America's finest Beaux-Arts concert halls. The cover, printed by the Rotograph Co. of New York City (printed in Germany), unfolds to reveal multiple accordion panels featuring Yale's campus landmarks: Woodbridge Hall (University Administration Building), the Law School, Vanderbilt Hall, Elm Street, West Rock Park Scene, and more. The "Souvenir Mail Card" designation and "Postage One Cent to All Countries" notice firmly date this to the pre-divided-back era (pre-1907), and the patent date of December 5, 1905 (No. 806631) is printed on the cover. An unaddressed, unmailed example in well-used but intact condition — a charming time capsule of Edwardian New Haven.
