Postcard 1905 Plymouth MA Forefathers Monument Novelty Pull-Out Souvenir

Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA1905Pre-linenFair-Good

Faith herself stands atop her granite plinth, one arm raised toward the New England sky — the National Monument to the Forefathers in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the largest solid granite monument in the United States, photographed here in a moody halftone that captures all 81 feet of allegorical ambition. But the card has a secret: a small brass-and-leather pull tab at the base of the image releases a concertina strip of additional Plymouth views — the Home of General John Winslow and John Warren (built 1730), the Court House, the Old Town House with buggies parked outside, and Plymouth Rock itself. Patented December 5, 1905 (Patent No. 805631) and published by the Rotograph Co. of New York City (printed in Germany), this is an early American pull-out novelty postcard in the "Souvenir Mail Card" printed-matter format, mailed at the 1-cent printed-matter rate. The brass eyelet pull-tab mechanism is intact and functional — a delightful piece of Edwardian postal engineering. The address side carries the pre-1907 undivided-back "Souvenir Mail Card / This Side for Address Only" format, firmly dating production to 1905–1906.
