Sage College at Cornell University — the Victorian Gothic women's residential college that opened in 1875 and made Cornell one of the first major American universities to house female students on campus. Funded by a $250,000 gift from Ithaca businessman Henry W. Sage, and designed by Cornell's first architecture professor Charles Babcock, the building featured not just dormitory rooms but a dining hall, library, swimming pool, gymnasium, and botanical conservatory — an exceptional statement of commitment to women's education. The ivy-clad brick towers and Gothic dormers are shown here before the building's 1996 demolition and reconstruction as Sage Hall, now home to the Johnson Graduate School of Management.
