First National Bank Greene Department Store New York Postcard c1940s

Greene, New YorkWhite BorderGood

The First National Bank of Greene commands the main corner of this upstate New York village — a solid Romanesque Revival brick building with arched windows and decorative cornice, the Greene Department Store's Victorian commercial block visible just next door. Greene, a small Chenango County town on the Chenango River, was a prosperous agricultural and manufacturing center in the 19th and early 20th centuries; its downtown historic district, anchored by the bank and a handful of ornate commercial buildings, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. An early traffic signal and bare winter trees complete the quiet small-town scene.
