The Statue of Liberty rises against a soft pink-and-blue sky in this hand-colored postcard — but look closer, and the overprint reveals it was really an advertisement for Gillies Coffee, New York's oldest continuously operating coffee merchant, founded in 1840 and still selling coffee today. Repurposing an existing view card with a promotional overprint was a common early-1900s advertising trick.
