Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, P.T. Barnum — all stayed at Paul Smith's Hotel, the most fashionable Adirondack resort of the Gilded Age, seen here reflected in the still water of Lower St. Regis Lake before it burned down in 1930. The site later became Paul Smith's College, but this hand-colored view preserves the sprawling wooden resort at the height of its era hosting America's most famous names.
