The Liberty Tower — 55 Liberty Street at Nassau Street in lower Manhattan — photographed just after its completion in 1910, when it was the tallest freestanding building in the world for its footprint. Designed by Chicago architect Henry Ives Cobb in the Gothic Revival style, the 33-story white limestone and terracotta tower rises sharply above its neighbors, its upper stories decorated with gargoyles and ornamental creatures largely invisible from street level. The photo was taken by Irving Underhill, the premier architectural photographer of early 20th-century New York, whose copyright appears in the upper right corner. Visible at left is the red-brick Singer Tower (1908), then the tallest building in the world. This card was never mailed.
