Waterloo La Belle-Alliance Napoleon Headquarters Belgium Postcard c1900

Waterloo, BelgiumPre-LinenGood

The farmhouse of La Belle-Alliance, where Napoleon Bonaparte established his headquarters during the final hours of the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815 — shown here as a working café-restaurant, a horse-drawn wagon outside and a Heinz Sauces advertisement painted on the wall, the old stone buildings still bearing their battle-era silhouette. It was near this spot, after Napoleon's rout, that Wellington and Blücher met to mark the end of the fighting — a meeting Field Marshal Blücher wanted to name the battle after, preferring "La Belle-Alliance" to the British choice of "Waterloo." The card's caption includes a printed historical narrative (paragraph 8 in a series) describing the final French cavalry charges and the Allied breakthrough. Published by E. Desaix of Brussels as part of a collectible Belgique Historique series, with the "Marque Déposée" star logo. Never mailed.
