Antique & Vintage Postcards

One of the most evocative views in Belgium — the massive twin-towered Porte Sainte-Croix (Holy Cross Gate) of Bruges reflected in the canal moat, with two working windmills visible on the rampart ridge behind it. The Sainte-Croix gate is one of the four surviving medieval city gates of Bruges, built in the 14th century when the city was among the wealthiest in northern Europe; the row of windmills along the eastern ramparts, grinding grain for the city, was a fixture of Bruges's skyline from the Middle Ages into the early 20th century. This card was published by the prestigious Brussels house of Éditions Nels, whose Série Bruges was among the most complete early documentary records of the city. Never mailed.
