A fashionably dressed Edwardian lady in scarlet points imperiously at a bewildered porter from atop an enormous travel trunk, while the tagline promises: "Within this trunk — it needs no key — Are lovely things for you to see." True to its word, the trunk's lid lifts (raise the flap) to reveal a concertina of miniature photographic views tucked inside — scenes of Seacombe and the Wirral Peninsula including The Promenade, Seacombe; Promenade and Beach, Egremont; and glimpses of New Brighton lighthouse and surrounding Mersey waterfront — all published by the celebrated Valentine & Sons, Ltd. of Dundee and London. This "Mailing Novelty" was cleared by the G.P.O. for a half-penny stamp (as a printed-matter novelty) and was indeed posted: a crisp King George V half-penny green stamp is affixed, cancelled, and the card was sent by a sender named H. (possibly Harold or Herbert) with "With best Greetings" to Miss Sevenshire at 137 Whitehards Road, Handsworth, Birmingham. The silhouette of a domed building — likely Liverpool's waterfront — fills the card's illustrated background, grounding the comic scene in its Mersey geography.
