Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sun, sea, and the smell of a roast chicken — this cheerful 1948 postcard from Colwyn Bay, North Wales, shows the elegant Victoria Pier and its Pavilion complex from an elevated beach-level angle, with 1940s motorcars parked at the pier entrance, holidaymakers promenading the boards, and a "Pier Orchestra" sign just legible on the entrance kiosk. Sent on 22 July 1948, the card carries a warm, breezy message from a sender named Elsa and a co-signatory O. Wesley to a recipient at 14 Isaac Street, West Park Street, Salford 5, Lancashire — "Having a good time & just feeling bloated up after a lovely chicken dinner. Weather is very nice but not too hot. Love Elsa & O. Wesley." The postmark is a double Colwyn Bay / Denbighshire machine cancel dated 5:15 PM, 22 July 1948, and the card carries a King George VI 2½d orange stamp. Colwyn Bay's Victoria Pier, opened in 1900, was one of Wales's great seaside attractions; its Pavilion was demolished in 1991 and the pier itself largely destroyed by fire in 2008, making photographic records like this particularly poignant. Printed in England, this is a classic mid-century British holiday card in very sound used condition.
