Antique & Vintage Postcards

Real photo postcard of the Ancient House (Sparrowe's House) at the Buttermarket in Ipswich, Suffolk — the entire upper facade smothered in an astonishing display of ornamental pargeting, the elaborate carved plasterwork depicting allegorical figures, foliage, and scenes representing the four continents, all executed c.1670. At street level, Edwardian shop fronts fill the arched openings, with advertising for Pears soap visible in one window. The Ancient House is one of the finest surviving examples of decorative pargeting in England and a Grade I listed building; in the early 20th century it housed a bookshop, drawing visitors who came as much for the architecture as the books.
