Color postcard of "Abeyton Lodge" — the residence of John D. Rockefeller Jr. at Tarrytown-on-Hudson, New York — a sprawling Tudor Revival and Shingle Style country house set in manicured grounds, a long gravel drive leading to the entrance, a lone groundskeeper visible near the door. The Rockefeller estate at Pocantico Hills was one of the grandest private properties in America; JDR Jr. would go on to restore Versailles, fund Colonial Williamsburg, build Rockefeller Center, and give the land for the United Nations headquarters. A cousin named George posted this from Tarrytown in September 1907, sending it to a Miss Sophia in McConnelsburg, Pennsylvania — a glimpse of Gilded Age wealth dispatched as a casual piece of tourist mail.
