Color postcard of the New York State Capitol in Albany — its massive Romanesque and Renaissance Revival facade rising above a cascade of stone steps, the red-tiled mansard roof and corner turrets sharp against a pale sky, bare winter trees in the foreground and an American flag above. Begun in 1867 and completed in 1899 at a cost of $25 million (among the most expensive American buildings of the 19th century), the Capitol was designed by a succession of architects including Thomas Fuller, Leopold Eidlitz, and H.H. Richardson, whose influence gives the interior its remarkable carved stonework. Someone named Elsie wrote across the top of the image: "We were throughout this in Albany." — the card is a souvenir of a journey, the Capitol glimpsed through a train window or on foot, worth marking.
