Antique & Vintage Postcards

A charming young traveler in a wide-brimmed violet hat clutches an oversized dark leather purse — turn the tiny crank and a concertina strip of miniature photographic views tumbles out, revealing the dramatic sandstone landscapes of Saxon Switzerland (Sächsische Schweiz) in the German state of Saxony. This whimsical novelty "Leporello" or pull-out postcard, mailed from the Bastei rock formation on June 1, 1933, was sent to young Herman at 514 Bloomingdale Road, Pleasant Plains, Staten Island, New York. The illustrated cover bears the caption "Bin soeben glücklich in der Sächs.-Schweiz angekommen" ("I have just happily arrived in Saxon Switzerland"). The miniature accordion views visible inside include Lilienstein, Bad Schandau, Polenztal mit Restaurant Waltersdorfer Mühle, and the famous Bastei bridge overlook — all iconic destinations in what is today the Saxon Switzerland National Park. The sender's message, dated June 1, 1933, opens "Lieber Burli!" (Dear little boy!) and sends warm greetings from the Bastei, signed with affection — a tender cross-continental hello from a German relative to a child in America during a tumultuous era.
