Sepia view of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires — the great neoclassical facade with its twelve Doric columns and elaborate pediment frieze facing onto the Plaza de Mayo, 1930s automobiles parked at the edge of the square. The cathedral occupies the north side of the Plaza de Mayo, the symbolic heart of Argentina, and has stood in various forms on the site since the 16th century; the current neoclassical front was completed in the 1820s. Within its walls lies the mausoleum of General José de San Martín, liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru — making it one of the most visited and revered buildings in South America.
