Antique & Vintage Postcards

Early photo postcard of the church at Waterloo, Belgium — the baroque domed rotunda of Saint-Joseph rising above the cobblestones, a lone figure in black on the street below, the Gothic spire of the older church behind it. The dome was built in 1690 by the Marquis of Gastanaga, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands; inside, commemorative plaques line the walls bearing the names of Allied officers killed at the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815 — making this a functioning memorial as well as a parish church. The card's printed English text explains the history for British and international visitors making the pilgrimage to the battlefield, who would have found Waterloo one of the most visited historical sites in Europe throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Published by E. Desaix of Brussels under his "La Belgique Historique" imprint, a house dedicated to documenting Belgium's historic sites.
