Undivided-back photo postcard of Gardner Hill, Leominster, Massachusetts — a broad forested hilltop panorama in early spring, the trees just coming into leaf, fields and woodlands rolling toward the horizon. Leominster, in central Massachusetts, was already well established as an industrial city by 1906, but Gardner Hill offered a pastoral escape that clearly meant something to the sender. A writer named J.B. mailed this on April 10, 1906, noting in pencil across the image that the hill "looks rather wintry this morning, though it has now stopped snowing and is raining" — dashing off a goodbye at breakfast before the day began, sending a small piece of raw New England spring to a Miss Annie in Somerville.
