Antique & Vintage Postcards

Embossed chromolithograph postcard of a still life — two fat cucumbers resting on a blue-rimmed plate, surrounded by vivid red and yellow pansies against a richly textured gold ground, the whole rendered with the lush, slightly overripe abundance that Central European chromolithography did so well at the turn of the century. Published in the Austro-Hungarian sphere, with a multilingual back covering ten languages of the empire and the wider postal union: German, Czech, Hungarian, Italian, French, Polish, Russian, Swedish, Dutch, and Spanish — a small United Nations of correspondence in a single postcard back. The vegetable-and-pansy still life was a popular greetings card genre in this era, particularly for name-day and seasonal occasions.
