Postcard 1906 Comic "Will Write When Rested" Tired Man Candle M.N.Co. Middletown NY

Middletown, New York, USA1906Pre-linenFair-Good

A grumpy, big-nosed cartoon man in yellow striped trousers shuffles off to bed clutching a lit candle, his nightcap askew — the bold caption "Will write when rested—" was a ready-made excuse that resonated with postcard senders of the Edwardian era who simply couldn't be bothered to pen a proper letter. Published in 1905 by M.N. Co., this early American comic card was mailed in 1906 from an unspecified location to a Mr. Harry Mac Innes at 33 Beacon Street, Middletown, Orange County, New York. The sender — signing with a name beginning "M" — warmly tells Harry that he "joins at land and was glad to hear from you," expresses hope that Charlotte is getting along fine, and shares that the family is "all O.K." and "soon we'd be ready to take a trip somewhere," giving us a charming glimpse of an early 20th-century family's optimistic plans. The bold block lettering and hand-colored yellow trousers make this card visually striking even today.
