Philadelphia Sesqui-Centennial Exposition Liberal Arts Palace Postcard 1926

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania1926Pre-linenGood

Official color postcard of the Entrance Niche of the Liberal Arts Palace at the Philadelphia Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition of 1926 — the bold Art Deco entrance arch framed by massive columns, a griffin-like sculptural figure above, and a sky crowded with biplanes and a dirigible, the cutting edge of aviation on display overhead. The Sesqui-Centennial marked 150 years of American independence, running from June 1 to December 1, 1926 on a 450-acre fairground in South Philadelphia; it was one of the last great world's fairs before the Depression, drawing visitors from across the country and abroad. The aircraft overhead were a signature feature — the exposition hosted aerial demonstrations that drew enormous crowds, the age of flight still new enough to astonish.
