Brussels Parc Palais de la Nation Belgian Parliament Postcard c1905

Brussels, Belgium1905Pre-linenGood

Photo postcard of the Palais de la Nation — the Belgian Federal Parliament — seen from the Parc de Bruxelles, the neoclassical facade with its pediment sculptures and columned portico framed by summer trees, gardeners tending a flowering mound in the foreground, Edwardian pedestrians on the paths beside them. The Palais de la Nation was built in 1783 as the meeting place of the Estates of Brabant; after Belgian independence in 1830 it became the home of the bicameral parliament, and has housed the Chamber of Representatives and the Senate ever since. The Parc de Bruxelles in front of it — one of the finest formal parks in Europe — was the site of fierce fighting during the Belgian Revolution of 1830. The gardeners bent over the flower bed have no idea they are being photographed into history.
