Antique & Vintage Postcards

Mailed from Allentown, Pennsylvania on October 24, 1907 and addressed to a gentleman named "Al" in Kutztown, Berks County via R.F.D. Route No. 4, this Union News Co. multi-view leporello pull-out postcard opens to reveal a vivid portrait of Allentown at its Edwardian peak — the cover shows a hand-tinted view of the imposing Soldiers Monument on Centre Square, its tall column topped by a bronze figure of Liberty, flanked by the busy commercial streetscape with the Yum Yum building visible at right and a horse-drawn carriage in the foreground. Inside, the accordion strip unfolds to show the Lehigh Valley Railroad Station (L.V.R.R.), the Reading Railroad & Central Railroad of New Jersey Station (R.R.R.&C.R. of N.J.), the sylvan creek scene in Dorney Park, and Hamilton Street looking toward the commercial core — a comprehensive snapshot of a prosperous Pennsylvania Lehigh Valley city. The reverse is postmarked Allentown PA, Oct 24, 7:30 AM, 1907, with the sender signing simply "L.S. He—" and the card classified as Printed Matter by Union News Co., Foot of Liberty St., N.Y. City, made in Germany. Card no. 469 is pencilled at lower right. Dorney Park, shown here in its early pastoral incarnation along Cedar Creek, would later become a major regional amusement park — making this early view particularly historically significant.
