Mackinac Race Sailboats Port Huron Michigan Linen Postcard c1940

Port Huron, Michigan1940LinenExcellent

Linen postcard capturing the start of the Mackinac sailboat race off Port Huron, Michigan — a fleet of trim racing sloops heeling into the wind under a glowing sunset sky, their sails catching the day's last light. The Port Huron-to-Mackinac race, launched in 1925 by Detroit's Bayview Yacht Club, quickly became one of the longest annual freshwater sailing races in the world, and each July thousands of spectators lined the Port Huron waterfront to watch thirty or forty trim sailing craft get away from the lightship. This card was never mailed, kept instead as a souvenir of the spectacle.
