Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sunlight filters through a canopy of live oaks lining St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, where a gleaming electric streetcar — the oldest continuously operating street railway in the world — glides past a stately Romanesque mansion framed by fan palms, in this richly hand-colored Detroit Photographic gem circa 1903. Card no. 9061 showcases the Garden District at its Gilded Age zenith, the lush subtropical landscaping a world away from the industrial North. The picture side carries a short, urgent message from Julia: "Arrived in Washington all OK. Will write today." — a reminder that these cards were the text messages of their era, dashed off from depots and hotel lobbies across a continent. The reverse, addressed simply to Mr. A.E. Eldridge, carries no stamp and was never formally mailed, preserving it in near-pristine condition.
