Postcard Edinburgh Castle & National Gallery Scotland c1910 Valentine's Series

Edinburgh, Scotland1912Pre-linenGood

Perched on its ancient volcanic plug above the neoclassical colonnades of the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle looms with the granite authority it has commanded since at least the 12th century — a contrast of raw geological drama and Georgian civic refinement that no traveller to Auld Reekie ever forgets. This monochrome "gravure-tone" card from Valentine's Series captures the view from Princes Street Gardens looking south-west, the castle's half-moon battery and Crown Square buildings clearly silhouetted against an open sky, while William Henry Playfair's twin-porticoed Gallery sits serenely in the middle ground. The divided-back format, the "Printed in Great Britain" legend, and the "2 / British / Manufacture" stamp-box device all point to the period roughly 1910–1918, when Valentine's leaned heavily on patriotic labelling following the wave of German-printed card imports. A card a well-heeled traveller named Margaret or a schoolboy philatelist named Robert might have slipped into an envelope after a summer holiday on the Forth.
