A wide-mouthed carnival face grins out from this delightfully cheeky Edwardian novelty card — "The Aberdeen Smiler" invites you to lift his chromolithographed plaid tie to reveal a hidden accordion-fold strip of miniature real-photo views of Aberdeen, Scotland, including the Fish Market, Aberdeen Harbour, Marischal College, the Beach and Bathing Station, and street scenes. The gimmick was irresistible in 1905: the verse reads "Lift up my tie if you like my style / There's something hidden behind my smile." Registered as Design No. 583,674, this pull-out novelty postcard was part of a booming Edwardian souvenir trade targeting tourists at seaside and market towns across Britain. Aberdeen — the "Granite City" — was a popular destination reached by rail, and local publishers catered to visitors hungry for mementos. The clown-like figure wears a striped boater hat with a tartan bow tie, enormous ears, and a rosy red nose, rendered in vivid chromolithography with the exaggerated comic style typical of the era. The concealed views are small black-and-white real-photo prints, accordion-folded and tucked behind the tie flap — all appear intact and present, making this a complete and desirable example of a fragile format that rarely survives whole.
