Real photo postcard looking down on Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley from high on Mount Wilson, the city and surrounding orange-grove country spread out below beneath a band of haze stretching to the horizon. Mount Wilson, rising above Pasadena in the San Gabriel Mountains, became a popular destination after a toll road reached its summit in the 1890s, and the Mount Wilson Solar Observatory — home to the famous 60-inch telescope and, from 1917, the 100-inch Hooker telescope — drew visitors from around the world. Photographer Brookwell sold panoramic views like this one as souvenirs to the hikers, mule-riders, and motorists who made the climb, preserving a Los Angeles still largely open country in the valleys below.
