Antique & Vintage Postcards

Aerial real photo postcard looking down into a smoking volcanic crater from above the clouds, a thin plume of steam rising from an active vent against a sea of fog filling the surrounding valleys. Captioned "Yakutan Volcano" and copyrighted by the photographer Robinson, the vantage point and persistent marine cloud layer are typical of the remote, frequently active volcanoes of Alaska's Aleutian Island chain — most likely Akutan Volcano, one of the chain's most consistently active peaks through the mid-20th century. Real photo postcards of these isolated volcanoes, shot from small aircraft, were sold as novelties to Alaska travelers and military personnel stationed in the territory.
