Postcard 1940s Mexico Guerrero Indian Maiden Luis Marquez Photo Fischgrund

Guerrero, Mexico1945ChromeExcellent

Wrapped in a sweeping sky-blue rebozo that cascades nearly to the ground, a young Guerrero woman stands serenely beside a hand-painted ceramic vessel in this luminous hand-tinted photograph — one of the most iconic image types of mid-twentieth-century Mexican tourism, captured here by master lensman Luis Márquez and published by the prestigious Publicaciones Fischgrund of Mexico City under their "Arco Iris" series. Márquez (1899–1978) was Mexico's foremost documentary and commercial photographer of indigenous life, and his Guerrero maiden portraits were reproduced on tens of thousands of postcards, calendars, and magazine covers; original Fischgrund printings of his work are collected both as photopostcard art and as social-history documents. The red embroidered huipil beneath the rebozo, bare feet on cobblestone, and the arched colonial stonework behind her place the setting in Guerrero state, likely near Taxco or the Costa Chica region. This card is unused and unaddressed, in very clean condition.
