1903 Gruss aus Frankfurt am Main Germany Litho Postcard Mailed to Cleveland Ohio

Frankfurt am Main, Germany1903Pre-linenFair-Good

A vibrant chromolithograph "Gruss aus Frankfurt a. Main" (Greetings from Frankfurt on the Main) postcard, postmarked Frankfurt am Main, 11 August 1903, and received in Cleveland, Ohio, 20 August 1903 — a 9-day transatlantic journey. The colorful panoramic scene depicts the Frankfurt skyline as seen from the south bank of the Main River, featuring the historic Eiserner Steg iron footbridge, a paddle-wheel steamboat trailing smoke, rowboats, and a racing eight-oared shell in the foreground. At lower left, the proud Frankfurt civic eagle coat of arms appears in red and gold within a circular medallion. The image is numbered No. 4 at lower left. The reverse, in the undivided-back format standard before 1907, carries a handwritten message in old German script addressed to Mr. & Mrs. John Goetz, Pearl Street, Cleveland, Ohio, North America. Franked with a German Empire 10 Pfennig Germania stamp (Scott #70 or similar, red), cancelled Frankfurt am Main with matching Cleveland Ohio receiving mark. An excellent example of the Gruss aus genre at its chromolithographic peak.
