Antique & Vintage Postcards

Clouds of white blossoms nearly obscure the dark skeletal branches of beach plum shrubs in this evocative Cape Cod spring scene, with a circular inset photograph showing the deep-purple fruit that the same bushes will yield come late summer — prized for generations by Cape Cod cooks for their tart, intensely flavored beach plum jelly. The beach plum (Prunus maritima) is as much a symbol of Cape Cod as the dunes or the lighthouse, thriving in the sandy, wind-scoured coastal terrain where little else will grow. This unused Curteich "3-D Natural Color" chrome card was distributed by E.D. West Co. of South Yarmouth and captures both the ephemeral beauty of the bloom and the culinary promise of the fruit in a single elegant composition.
