Hahn's Bakery Middle Amana Iowa Stone Hearth Oven Chrome Postcard c1960s Dexter

Middle Amana, Iowa1965ChromeGood

Step inside the warm, whitewashed walls of Hahn's Bakery at Middle Amana, Iowa, where a baker in traditional white uniform and toque tends loaves in a century-old stone hearth oven — round loaves of crusty bread crowd a wooden shelf at left while ornate braided challahs and fluted Gugelhupf coffee cakes cool in the foreground, a scene unchanged from the communal kitchens of the Amana Colonies' 19th-century founding. The Amana Colonies, a network of seven villages in Iowa County settled by German Pietist immigrants of the Community of True Inspiration beginning in 1855, maintained communal dining halls and craft bakeries as expressions of their faith-based communal economy until the "Great Change" of 1932; Hahn's Bakery survived as a working artisan operation and became one of the Colonies' most beloved tourist draws in the postwar decades. Published by Hurley Supply Co. of Des Moines and printed by Dexter Press (West Nyack, NY), this chrome-era card bears a penciled price notation of "150" (likely $1.50 retail) on the reverse.
