Antique & Vintage Postcards

Athens, Georgia's self-proclaimed "largest restaurant and drive inn" commanded U.S. Route 29 just one mile west of the University of Georgia campus, and this vibrant chrome-era card shows why it was a local institution: a full lot of early 1950s automobiles — streamlined sedans in two-tone paint, whitewall tires, and pontoon fenders — pack the forecourt of a low-slung brick building anchored by a dramatic vertical tower bearing the restaurant's neon sign. The Pig Drive Inn was the quintessential mid-century Southern roadhouse, serving curbside and dining-room patrons with equal attention, and the parade of period cars (identifiable as early 1950s models by their styling) makes this card as much a classic automobile document as a restaurant record. Published by Henry Hahn of Eastman, Georgia and printed by Dexter Press using Kodachrome and Ansco Color processes, the card is an unusually sharp example of early chrome printing on a rounded-corner format.
