Antique & Vintage Postcards

A horse and carriage moves unhurried down the broad unpaved boulevard of Ellis Place in Ossining, New York, its path arched by a cathedral canopy of mature elms that filter the summer light — a quintessentially tranquil image of small-town Hudson Valley life in 1909, just a stone's throw from the infamous Sing Sing Prison that the town would not officially rename itself away from until 1901. The hand-colored photographic print, published by Valentine & Sons of New York and printed in Great Britain, renders the clapboard homes lining the street in soft greens and yellows. On September 7, 1909, someone wrote to Fred in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County: "Bonnie — will miss you all O.K. very much, with love, Pollizel."
