Postcard 1938 Linen Penobscot Building Detroit Michigan Skyscraper

Detroit, MI, USA1938LinenGood

Soaring above Detroit's downtown skyline in cool silver-blues and cream, the Penobscot Building commands the frame of this handsome 1938 linen postcard — its Art Deco stepped crown and globe finial reaching skyward while period automobiles navigate the busy streets below, offering a snapshot of Motor City at its mid-century peak of confidence and commerce. The 47-story Penobscot, completed in 1928 and designed by Wirt Rowland of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls, was at the time Michigan's tallest building and remains one of Detroit's most beloved architectural landmarks. Mailed from Detroit on August 4, 1938, the card carries a brief, warm message from "M.G." to a woman named Lena — "Dear Lena, Just a line to let you know we will be to see you Sunday." Addressed to Mrs. W. Stringer at 601 14th Street in Port Huron, Michigan, this card connects two Michigan communities with a simple neighborly visit. A 1¢ Benjamin Franklin stamp (Scott #552 or similar series) franks the card.
