Postcard 1920s Linen New Hotel Morton Grand Rapids Michigan 2c Stamp

Grand Rapids, MI, USA1928LinenFair-Good

Standing proud at a bustling Grand Rapids street corner, the New Hotel Morton rises in rich russet brick above a rusticated limestone base in this vivid linen-era postcard — period automobiles with spoke wheels parked at the curb and a lone pedestrian crossing the cobblestones beneath ornate cast-iron street lamps, evoking the prosperous energy of a Michigan city in the Roaring Twenties. The Hotel Morton, a grand commercial hostelry that anchored downtown Grand Rapids for decades, is depicted here in fine detail, its arched ground-floor entries and decorative cornice speaking to an era of civic architectural pride. Mailed November 29 from Grand Rapids to the Stringer family at 601 14th Street in Port Huron — the same address that appears in other cards in this collection — the brief message reads: "Arrived ok. The weather some cold. Hate etc.", a wonderfully candid traveler's complaint. A 2¢ Washington stamp (Scott #634 type) franks the card at the period letter rate.
