Postcard 1944 Linen Pontiac General Hospital Pontiac Michigan WWII Era

Pontiac, MI, USA1944LinenGood

Framed by mature elms in full summer leaf, the buff-brick mass of Pontiac General Hospital gleams in the warm afternoon light of this 1944 linen postcard — a row of 1930s automobiles parked along the curb and a quietly optimistic blue sky overhead, the image radiating the mid-century confidence of American civic institutions even as the world was at war. Pontiac General Hospital, a cornerstone of Oakland County healthcare, served the rapidly growing Detroit suburb throughout the automobile boom years. This card was mailed September 16, 1944 by Jack and Margaret, vacationing in Pontiac with friends and a sister-in-law, to a young woman named Jean in Oakland, California: "We are on our vacation here and enjoying ourselves with our friends and my sister-in-law. We are leaving for Montreal & Quebec Monday at 9 am. Will send cards from there. Love to Mother & Self." A wartime vacation itinerary spanning Michigan and Quebec, written in the final year of World War II, makes this a quietly compelling social document. The card bears a 1¢ "Freedom" commemorative stamp from the Four Freedoms series.
