Postcard Utrecht met Domtoren Netherlands Gothic Tower Linen c1930s

Utrecht, Netherlands1935LinenGood

Rising above the rooftops of Utrecht like a stone exclamation point, the Dom Tower — the tallest church tower in the Netherlands at 112 metres — dominates this richly hand-tinted linen-era postcard. The view is taken from an elevated vantage point, revealing the Gothic belfry's open arcaded lantern and its ornate pinnacled crown catching the light against a pale blue sky, while the red-tiled rooftops of the medieval city fan outward in every direction below. Built between 1321 and 1382, the tower has stood detached from the nave of St. Martin's Cathedral since the nave collapsed in a tornado in 1674 — a quirk of urban geography that makes the tower all the more photogenic. The warm colour palette and accordion-fold format suggest this is one panel from a souvenir leporello booklet sold to tourists and soldiers alike during a period of great European tension.
