Postcard Belfast Castle & Lough Northern Ireland RPPC W.E. Walton c1910

Belfast, Northern Ireland1907Pre-linenExcellent

Perched dramatically on the slopes of Cave Hill with Belfast Lough shimmering in the distance, this striking real-photo postcard captures Belfast Castle in its full Scottish Baronial glory — turrets piercing the sky, terraced gardens stepping down the hillside, and the vast lough spreading toward the horizon in a scene of almost painterly grandeur. Completed in 1870 for the third Marquess of Donegall and later gifted to the city of Belfast, the castle was one of the great Victorian showpieces of Ulster, and this early W. E. Walton photograph — taken from an elevated vantage point above the estate — conveys both the castle's commanding presence and the pastoral sweep of the landscape below, with young conifers still finding their footing on the slopes, hinting at how recently the gardens had been laid out. The back carries the understated divided-back format with "Communication" and "Address" labels, a hallmark of early Edwardian-era cards printed before message-side conventions fully standardized, and the publisher imprint — W. E. Walton, 57 Royal Avenue, Belfast — anchors this as a locally produced keepsake from one of the city's most respected stationers and photographers of the era.
