Postcard c1910 Conservatory Botanic Gardens Belfast RPPC W.E. Walton

Belfast, Northern Ireland1910RPPCExcellent

Edwardian Belfast's most elegant iron-and-glass landmark gleams in warm sepia tones as strolling visitors in long dark coats and hats make their way along the curved paths of the Botanic Gardens — a rare real-photo card capturing the magnificent Palm House conservatory in its full curvilinear Victorian splendour, the ribbed dome soaring above a city church spire in the distance. The Belfast Botanic Gardens Palm House, designed by Charles Lanyon and completed in 1840, is one of the earliest surviving examples of a curvilinear cast-iron glasshouse in the world; by the time this photograph was taken, the gardens had become a beloved public retreat for the city's linen-trade families and shipyard workers alike — Belfast's White Star Line was then building RMS Titanic just two miles away at Harland & Wolff. Published by W. E. Walton of 57 Royal Avenue, Belfast, a noted local stationer and postcard publisher of the Edwardian period, this real-photo card shows exceptional photographic clarity and human interest detail in the foreground figures.
