Antique & Vintage Postcards

Towering Corinthian columns and roofline statuary announce the grandeur of the U.S. Custom House on Bowling Green — one of the most ornate Beaux-Arts government buildings ever erected in America, captured here in a crisp sepia real-photo-style halftone print likely dating to c. 1905–1907. Cass Gilbert's masterpiece, completed in 1907, processed the lion's share of American import duties at a time when New York Harbor was the busiest port on earth; the sculptural groups flanking the entrance steps represent the four continents. The undivided back (message area blank, address side only) and the domestic-one-cent / foreign-two-cents postage notice date this card to the 1901–1907 undivided-back era. The card was never used, retaining strong contrast and sharp detail in the column capitals and roofline sculpture.
