Postcard 1907 Trinity Church Lower Broadway American Surety Bldg NYC USED

New York City, USA1907Pre-linenGood

Looking north up a canyon of masonry on Lower Broadway, the rust-red Gothic spire of Trinity Church commands the left frame while the gleaming white American Surety Building — one of New York's early skyscrapers, completed 1896 — soars behind it, making the Victorian brownstones between them look almost quaint. This richly lithographed Souvenir Post Card Co. card, copyrighted 1897 by A. Loeffler and printed in Germany, was postmarked New York, N.Y. Station A on October 18, 1907, and mailed with a 1-cent Benjamin Franklin green stamp to Sophia in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania — the small Franklin County seat tucked in the Tuscarora Mountains. The Romanesque Revival building visible mid-right is likely the old Trinity Building. A rare dated-use example of a Loeffler copyright card from the height of the postcard golden age.
