Postcard 1917 Brünn Kapuzinerkirche Dom Moravia Austria WWI Era Used

Brno (Brünn), Moravia, Czech Republic (then Austria-Hungary)1917Pre-linenGood

Shot from a high vantage point on a cobblestoned Moravian square, this vivid hand-colored postcard of Brünn (today's Brno, Czech Republic) frames the soaring twin Gothic spires of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul rising dramatically above the modest rooftops of the Kapuzinerkirche and the bustling market vendors below — a city that was simultaneously the capital of Moravia and one of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's great industrial centers in the final years of WWI. The card, dated in handwriting "9/m. 1917," was mailed via the Imperial and Royal Austrian Post to Fräulein Helene in Wieselburg an der Erlauf, Bezirk Scheibbs, Lower Austria, bearing a 10-Heller crown stamp and covered on the message side with dense Gothic-script German handwriting. A shop sign reading "E & R Ransk" is visible at street level, a rare commercial detail for local historians. Publisher credit "Asnert & Bodlich, Brünn" appears in the lower margin of the back.
