Postcard 1920s Florida Cabbage Field Workers Linen Asheville Post Card Co

Florida, USA1928Pre-linenExcellent

Towering wicker harvest baskets overflow with fresh-cut cabbage heads in the foreground while a line of nearly a dozen workers — men and women, a mix of races — poses proudly across the lush green rows of a Florida cabbage field backed by tall palms and pines in this vivid white-border-to-linen-transition Florida agricultural card. Published by the Asheville Post Card Co. of North Carolina as part of their "Beautiful Florida Series" and printed by Curt Teich's Chicago operation (C.T. American Art Colored, card #21450), this unused gem captures the scale and labor intensity of Florida's winter vegetable industry in the 1920s–1930s. The conical harvest baskets — a distinctive feature of southeastern US vegetable harvesting of the era — make this an especially photogenic and historically rich document of Depression-era Florida farm life.
