Postcard Lyon France Place des Terreaux Hotel de Ville Fontaine Bartholdi 1920s

Lyon, France1925Pre-linenFair-Good

Early automobiles crowd the Place des Terreaux in Lyon, France, in this elegant sepia photographic postcard that captures one of France's grandest civic squares in the interwar years — to the left, the ornate Baroque façade of the Hôtel de Ville rises in elaborate detail, while to the right the classical colonnade of the Palais des Arts (now the Musée des Beaux-Arts) stretches in stately procession, and in the foreground the massive Fontaine Bartholdi — created by the same sculptor who gave the world the Statue of Liberty — commands the square with its four river-horses and allegorical figures. Published by J. Cellard of Lyon, a prolific and respected regional French publisher, this card belongs to their standard sepia documentary series of the city. The "yo+" notation in white on the image face is a minor collection marking. The unused card retains its original crispness.
