Antique & Vintage Postcards

A medieval gate tower looms over a quiet cobblestone street in Coburg, Bavaria — the "Judenturm," or Jews' Tower, a 14th-century fortification that once marked the edge of the old Jewish quarter, its characteristic onion-dome crown and heavy ashlar masonry framed by the prosperous Wilhelmine commercial streetscape that grew up around it. Pedestrians in period dress move through the archway passage; shop fronts and shuttered windows line both flanking streets in this crisp photographic card produced by the court art establishment of Laffier & Co., Graz. The Judenturm — properly the Ketschentor — acquired its vernacular name from its proximity to the medieval Jewish settlement and remains a Coburg landmark. Unused, with only penciled "DD" notation on the reverse.
