Postcard 1910 s'Gravenhage Ridderzaal The Hague Netherlands Trams Mailed Kansas

The Hague (s'Gravenhage), Netherlands1910Pre-linenGood

Two electric trams glide past the medieval Ridderzaal — the Knights' Hall of the Binnenhof, seat of the Dutch parliament since the 13th century — its soaring Gothic facade and flanking round towers captured in a crisp sepia halftone that perfectly conveys the monumental authority of the building against a bright Dutch sky; pedestrians in Edwardian dress thread between the tram tracks as the political heart of the Netherlands hums with quiet purpose. The Ridderzaal, built for Count William II of Holland around 1280 and restored extensively in the 1890s, is where the Dutch monarch delivers the annual Speech from the Throne (Prinsjesdag) — a tradition alive and well in 1910 when this card was posted. Sender Ella writes from The Hague to Mrs. S.J. in Lawrence, Kansas, a transatlantic correspondence that crossed the Atlantic for a Netherlands 2½-cent Queen Wilhelmina stamp. Published by Knackstedt & Näther Lichtdruck, Hamburg (Serie 576, No. 20), specialists in high-resolution collotype ("Lichtdruck") printing.
