Postcard Budapest 1898 Királyi Vár Chain Bridge Danube Kir Var Levelező-Lap

Budapest, Hungary1898Pre-linenGood

Mailed from Budapest on 17 August 1898 — among the earliest years picture postcards circulated in the Austro-Hungarian Empire — this rare pre-divided-back card captures the sweeping Buda Castle hill and the celebrated Chain Bridge (Lánchíd) reflected in the still waters of the Danube, printed in cool monochrome lithography. The caption in the image reads Kir. vár és Lánchíd (Royal Castle and Chain Bridge). The card was sent by a woman named Hinda to her dear friend Henriette in Vienna, the handwritten German text flowing in expressive Kurrent script across nearly the entire picture surface — a hallmark of the "undivided back" era when the reverse was reserved solely for the address. Henriette lived at XVIII. Wöglainsdorfergasse No. 79, Wien, and the envelope side is headed Levelező-Lap (Hungarian for postcard/correspondence card), confirming Hungarian postal issue. The Budapest postmark dates precisely to Aug 17, 1898, with a Vienna arrival mark of Aug 18, 1898 — a remarkable 24-hour cross-border transit.
